DMW.nu turns 15. Time to look back on a year full of highlights, a strong focus on nature conservation, and beautiful taxidermy.
We kicked off the year with a bang: our participation in one of the world’s largest interior design fairs, Maison & Objet. Our stand was filled with butterflies, skulls and taxidermy pieces. We met new clients, reconnected with familiar faces, and gathered inspiration for the year ahead.
Our demo days were once again a great success. Visitors were given a unique behind-the-scenes look: from preparing birds to mounting insects. Education can be fun too, and it certainly was. Thanks to everyone who came by, asked questions and shared in the experience.
In June we celebrated our 15th anniversary. What started as a modest 65 m² space with Erwin, Sophie and Nicolette has grown into an internationally recognised showroom with its own workshop. We are grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years, from clients to colleagues, from fans to family.
This year we had the opportunity to prepare several special animals. Among them a wolf with an impressive presence, and a koala that now stands proudly in our private collection. Every animal tells a story, and we are proud to help preserve those stories.
On the night of August 4th to 5th, our beloved taxidermy tiger was stolen. A heartbreaking event that affected us deeply. But the support we received was overwhelming. Messages, tips, shared posts, it felt as if all of Nijmegen (and far beyond) was standing with us. Thank you so much. We are still searching.
This year our colleagues Daphne and Sophie served as judges at the UK Guild of Taxidermists Championships. An honour and a recognition of their craftsmanship and expertise. We are incredibly proud that DMW.nu is also internationally appreciated and that our team plays an active role on that stage.
Recently, we added an extinct Slender-billed Curlew to our collection. This is the first bird species in Europe in modern times to be truly considered extinct. Its disappearance is one of the most tragic examples of how human impact, overpopulation and habitat loss can cause a species to vanish forever. We see it as our responsibility to tell this story and to offer visitors the chance to come face to face with an animal that now exists only in museums.
This year we gave a white-tailed eagle a second life after it fatally collided with a wind turbine in the Eemshaven. The mounted animal reminds us of a harsh reality: every year, tens of thousands of birds die due to wind turbines in the Netherlands, including rare species. The energy transition calls for greater attention to the risks for wildlife and the importance of protecting biodiversity.
Natural history heritage
We are committed to making natural history heritage tangible and to raising awareness of the vulnerability of our natural world. The stories of the Slender-billed Curlew and the white-tailed eagle underline our mission and the need to work together towards a sustainable future for both people and animals.
Our wonderful team
Behind DMW.nu is a team of passionate professionals. Together we ensure quality, creativity and a healthy dose of humour. Whether it’s preparing an animal, assisting a client or organising a demo day, we do it together, with pleasure and pride.
